On February, 22nd, by the Turkish authorities 14 operating and retired high-ranking military officials have been arrested on suspicion in participation in the plot organisation on government overthrow in 2003.
Among detained — the former deputy chief of the Joint Staff, the general in resignation Ergin Sajgun.
Arrests and searches have passed in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. Among arrested persons have appeared also the former commander of the Air Forces the general in resignation Ibragim Fyrtyna, the former commander of Naval Forces an admiral in resignation Ozgen Omek, the general in resignation Engin Alan and 10 colonels.
The prospective plot carrying the name the Sledge hammer, set as the purpose to destabilise Turkey by realisation of explosions in mosques and wrecks of military planes. According to the mass-media, the given plan has been developed in 2002. In the next spring it would be presented o the high-ranking officers in a staff of the First army of ground forces.
According to the plan, revolution should begin with scale provocations. In places of a congestion of people, in particular in mosques, should work bombs, over Aegean sea it was planned to destroy the military plane, and in charge of the organisation of acts of terrorism should be Greece.
In the created chaos military men ostensibly planned to seize power in their hands. This version was denied by the general in resignation Chetin Dogan and the chief of Joint Staff Ilker Bashbug who consider that arrests and charges are a part of campaign for discredit of armed forces.
In 2007 in Turkey action about revolution preparation has been brought. Since then a safety force has arrested and has detained tens persons among which there were former and operating military men, and also representatives of intelligency and creative elite of the country. The fault of some arrested persons has not proved to be true subsequently, processes on business of others proceed.
Turkish military men several times changed a political mode in the country: revolutions occurred in 1960, 1971, 1980 and 1997.
