— What, on your belief, the real purpose was put by a Soviet management of that time, deporting Tatars from Crimea?

Gulnara Bekirova:

-… Recently was extended and «the Jewish version» deportations of the Crimean Tatars. In the most radical form popular mainly among publicists, it is reduced to idea that the Crimean Tatars have moved to clear peninsula for creation of the Jewish autonomy in Crimea.

The idea of creation of an autonomy of Jews in Crimea has arisen by preparation of a propaganda and business trip of members of Jewish Antifascist committee Mihoels and Fefer in the USA in the summer of 1943. It was supposed that the American Jews will apprehend it with enthusiasm and will agree to finance all expenses connected with it. The problem of a special prospecting sounding — an establishment resedence in the USA of contact pieces to the American Zionist movement in 1943-1944 has been successfully executed by our management. In January, 1944 Epstein and Fefer have created the project of the report to Stalin where the idea of creation of the Jewish autonomy in Crimea was stated. Fefer, under P.Sudoplatov’s certificate, some times discussed the Crimean project with Beriya…

However, as Russian historian Jores Medvedev marks: «the Note about Crimea» have quickly sent in archive without any trial. Proposals JAC made in it were unreal, and also unreasoned. To formulate them even before discharging of Crimea of German occupation it was extremely premature. Offer ЕАК provided creation in Crimea not «independent», but «allied» republic — JSSR that demanded resettlement to Crimea more than one million Jews for formation here the Jewish ethnic majority. Droughty northern steppe areas of Crimea could be moving zones only. To force city dwellers to plow up here a virgin soil it was possible only by compulsion ».

«The Jewish trace» deportations of the Crimean Tatars isn’t found out in documents of a principal organ of the power in war — the State committee of defense. And if to remember that after deportation of the Crimean Tatars, up to 1954, Crimea occupied mainly Russian (and at all Jews), initiators of the project in 1948-1952 in connection with so-called «business JAC» have been arrested and involved in a criminal liability on charge in espionage and anti-Soviet nationalist activity, — «the Jewish version» is represented to us decided.
