Dzhemilev Began to Talk After Twenty Years of Silence

The chairman of Medzhlis of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev supports granting of the official status to Crimean Tatar and Russian languages in Crimea.

«Crimean Tatar language on the Crimean peninsula should be one of official languages. Owing to the historical circumstances which have developed on peninsula, language of the Russian-speaking majority (region) too should have the status», — the leader of a Medzhlis has told.

Thus, he has underlined, status granting to these languages shouldn’t restrain a state language — an Ukrainian.

Dzhemilev also considers that in Crimea there are no schools with Crimean Tatar training language.

«10 % of Crimean Tatar children of school age go to 15 schools approximately. The others are compelled to go to Russian schools. There are at several Russian-speaking schools classes with Crimean Tatar language, but they practically give nothing», — head of Medzhlis has told.

Dzhemilev names threat of loss of national identity and assimilation of one of the main problems of the Crimean Tatars.

«During half a century Crimean Tatar language was under a ban. Certainly, we expected from the state more attention to our problems, unfortunately, it doesn’t occur», — he has told.

Thus Dzhemilev has declared that one of languages of national minorities of Ukraine as a whole shouldn’t have privileges.
