Dzhemilev: Ukraine Should Have Its Own Military Base in Crimea

On April, 26th the Supreme Rada ratified the Kharkov agreements, having allowed to be the Black Sea fleet in Crimea as early as 25 years. Despite a quiet information background, it is obvious that half of country has not accepted this agreement. Whether the opposition will be capable to unite? Whether can break through information blockade? Whether will manage to deduce on streets undeceived society? These questions UNIAN has set to leaders of oppositional political forces.

Mustafa Dzhemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, the People’s Deputy:

HAVING MADE EFFORTS, THE OPPOSITION CAN MOBILIZE PEOPLE

That policy which is spent a present management, does not suit us, therefore we will consider still a question on joining to opposition. I said that the Crimean Tatars feel deep disappointment with such policy. We have got used that from the moment of a gain of Crimea with opinion of the radical people here were not considered. But we very much counted that in independent Ukraine, which itself was in the same position, there will be other relation and other behaviour with the radical people. And here so to dispose of our territory, to represent this territory to other country is a continuation of an imperial politics which was spent on peninsula by centuries after joining of Crimea to empire. We yet do not feel information blockade, but I expect that we still will feel it. I do not think that the opposition can quickly organise mass protests of people, but I believe that, having made efforts and having done work, it can deduce people on streets.

Being in Strasbourg, I have learnt that in parliament ratified the Kharkov agreements. How it occurred, I knew from the press. Instead of from the press I know that among those who «voted» for ratification of agreements there were deputies who were here in Strasbourg. These agreements do extremely serious harm not only to the Crimean Tatar people, but also national interests of Ukraine. And I think that for the sake of denouncement of agreements it is necessary to take all measures, up to dissolution of such parliament.

In Ukraine there will be a fleet of the country which is periodically involved in military adventures and then this fleet takes part in these adventures. During war of Russia with Georgia BSF fired at coast of Georgia. If it was not Georgia, and other country, on other party of Black sea which has a striking power in three-four times more than the Black Sea fleet, what then has occurred? After all then the hypothetical opponent would have the right to strike blow in the answer not only on the ships, but also on bases of Black sea. Why should we be involved in another’s wars? Why should we give base to the country which high-ranking officials say from time to time, that Crimea is territory of Russia, that the peninsula all the same will return? There is an analogy to Georgia when at first gave the Russian passports to Abkhazes, and then have decided to protect the rights of those to whom have given out passports, and cut territory? And at such intention and armies it is not necessary to enter into Crimea. If Russia wants to arrange performance, as in Georgia, the army on territory of the country there is already ready. Russia will constantly support separative forces. It can go on any provocation to destabilise a situation. Ukraine itself should have military base.
