The Crimean Tatars’ Situation is Confused

To elections in presidents of Ukraine remains less than a week. The majority of political forces of Crimea were already advanced with support of this or that candidate, however at the Crimean Tatar people meanings were divided and a situation is confused.

Let’s notice that the Crimean Tatar community, one of the greatest in Ukraine ethnic and religious communities, on last elections always showed consolidation, but this time even Kurultaj of the Crimean Tatar people, passed on December, 5-6th, 2009 in Akmesdzhit (Simferopol), has not advanced an accurate item.

Let’s remind that head of Medzhlis of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev has recommended to the Crimean Tatars on the first round to vote for that candidate who, in their opinion, is the most democratic and in whose electoral programme the rights of the Crimean Tatars are considered, or its program does not contradict as a whole to interests of the Crimean Tatar people, and in the second round strictly to vote only for one candidate and not to divide a voice.

At the same time, oppositional to Medzhlis the political organisation «Milli Firka» has urged the Crimean Tatars to boycott elections. At this time and in Victor Yushchenko’s staff, and in the district and local territorial commissions from candidate Yushchenko the Crimean Tatars are put forward.

And still, judging by experience of previous years, experts predict that the majority of the Crimean Tatars already in the first round will vote for Yulia Timoshenko. However, this time, such consolidated voting as in the end of 2004, mark local observers, won’t be any more.
