«Enmity Language» in the Crimean Press

In January, 2011 experts ОО «the Evpatoriya center of regional development» within the limits of the project «the Crimean mass-media. Enmity language» which since September, 2010 is carried out by the organization with support of International Fund «Renaissance», has continued the analysis of materials 29 Crimean and local printing mass-media.

It is necessary to notice that in comparison with December of last year, application of «enmity language» as the tool of kindling of international conflicts and not tolerant relation to representatives of other ethnic groups, on pages of the Crimean mass-media has considerably increased: 42 materials where authors support «enmity language» — in contrast 19 cases in December, 2010 have been fixed. The most widespread carriers of the fixed cases of «enmity language» traditionally there are journalistic articles and an editorial matter, jokes and statements of politicians.

More often objects of «enmity language», applied by journalists and editions in January, became an Ukrainian and the Crimean Tatars, and the main characters of jokes — Russian.

The following was the most widespread kinds of «enmity language» in January:

— Charges of this or that ethnic group or its representatives in nationalism, chauvinism or extremism — 20 cases (38,46 %);

— A mention of an ethnic group or its representatives as those in a humiliating or offensive context — 13 cases (25 %);

— Creation of a negative image of an ethnic group (it is connected not with concrete charges, and is more likely transferred by tone of the text or a text fragment) — 9 cases (17,31 %).

To thicket of other printing mass-media of Crimea met «enmity language» in January materials of the newspaper «Crimean time» — 15 times; «Komsomol truth in Ukraine — Crimea» and «the Crimean truth» — on 5 times.
