Turkey Wishes To Approach Its Constitution to EU Standards

The Turkish government has left to opposition a package of amendments to the constitution which are directed on acceleration of integration of the country to the European Union, informs AFP.

The office led by prime minister Redzhep Tajip Erdogan has suggested to make changes to more than 20 articles of the organic law accepted after a military coup d’etat of 1980 year. Reform concerns systems of justice, change of powers of parliament, and also gives possibility of suit of organizers of revolution.

Besides, the project of amendments provides strengthening of the control over observance of human rights and gives to state employees more ample opportunities for struggle for the rights up to carrying out of strikes.

Now the party in power of justice and development has the majority in country parliament, however it does not have enough voices for modification of the constitution. If the opposition blocks acceptance of amendments the constitutional reform can be spent by a referendum.

Representatives of opposition even during preparation of amendments have declared that will not approve reform, and have accused party in power of attempts of usurpation of the power.

Turkey has begun negotiations about the introduction into EU in 2005. It has called inconsistent reaction of many European political leaders who have declared that the country is not ready to joining to the European Union. In May, 2009 the president of France Nicolas Sarkozy and German chancellor Angela Merkel have opposed expansions of the European Union at the expense of Turkey.

Merkel has declared that Turkey need to be offered exclusive partnership from EU, but not high-grade membership. Sarkozy has alternatively suggested to create an incorporated economic zone with Turkey.
